End to the 2008 Season

Well it was a barn burner of a game but we fell short against the Rebellion last night 39-36. It was a contest in which we had the lead until just a few minutes from the final whistle. It was great effort on the part of a team that played without some of our key players, but again demonstrated that whatever the line-up, we have players that compete well. Mike West suffered a shoulder injury and had to leave the game when we were up by 2 tries and Wes Farrow played nearly the entire match with a pulled hamstring. Tim Root scored multiple tries although the back of the match was awarded to Mike West for his fearless running. Amongst the forwards, I gave tribute to our breaks for the evening Pat Guthrie and Greg Zettel whose combined age is nearly triple digits, however their efforts kept us in the match throughout. The forward of match was Mike Lavalle.

Upcoming events:

We are finished with our 15’s season. The 7-a-side season will follow shortly with tournaments beginning in June. I’ll let you know when those practices begin shortly.

Coming up next Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6, the college will be playing at Loyola in their opportunity to qualify for nationals. I hope many of you will be there in support of their efforts. I went last year on Sunday when Oxy won an exciting overtime match versus USC to win 3^rd place.

The details of these matches will be sent by me as soon as I have them, as I understand the www.scrfu.org site may have them incorrectly.

May 3- The over forties tournament in Catalina. Many of us will be going over on Friday with Matt Brown and I playing in a golf tournament on Friday. We could use 2 more players for the 9 hole course which has clubs for rent. We will be staying in a house and if you can make it over, there will be a place for you to spend the night if you are interested. Please let me know if you may come as we may rent 2 houses. We will play 3- 20 minute matches and there is a Noon match featuring all 50 year old plus players that are able to strap on the boots from the assembled players. If you haven’t been over it’s a great party for a day or a weekend. For more details go to www.catalinarugby.org. Our matches will be vs. Lunchtime Legends at 8:40, Pasadena Owls 11:10 and the Golden Gaels at 2:15.

Finally our team awards will be given out at a location to be named. Please let me know if you can host or have an idea about hosting. Possible dates include the following:

April 19^th

April 26^th

May 17th

May 24^th Memorial Day weekend

May 31^st

Please let me know if any of these dates do not work for you. We generally start in the mid-afternoon and we provide the beer and you bring the side dishes as well as something to BBQ at the home of one our willing players. We try to have an award for everyone. We will bring wood bases to the event and any of you may volunteer to do an award for any player or players that you choose. It can constructed, glued, etc at the venue. A dymo tape gun will be there for your creative pleasure.

Last we do have serious awards that you may begin voting on in reply to this email.
